for right now. the suspect, james holmes, has been arrested. police believe he acted alone and his motive right now is unknown. tonight, authorities in colorado are trying to piece the puzzle together and we are learning new details about what led up to the tragic event. tom fitzgerald has been tracking the information and he has the latest from the newsroom. tom. >> that motive is the big question tonight in aurora, colorado, where federal local officials are still trying to get to the bottom of exactly what motivated this massacre. the suspect surrendered to authorities where this all unfolded and as this day has gone on, there were just more questions about what fueled this attack. >> it was shortly after midnight when dispatchers started sending police to a packed colorado theater. a man was shooting into the audience. >> units getting into the scene now. somebody actively shooting. >> it all started when the alleged gunman, 24-year-old james holmes, went to the front of the theater and let loose a gas canister. some believed it was a stunt for the film and gunfire rang out

to clear the scene. finally, the suspect, james holmes, he is in police custody. we expect to see him for the first time monday for his first court appearance. let's stay on the suspect for right now. investigators are still waiting to get into his apartment. looking through the window they found an arsenal and they found booby-traps. our poppy harlow is at the complex. poppy, good morning to you. how long will it be until police can get into the apartment? do we know? >> we now have an answer to that. this just coming into nick valencia. frank is with the aurora police department, gary. he tells us that the fire department here, along with atf, will be returning to the residence of james holmes, right behind my right shoulder here, at around 7:00 a.m. local time. that's two hours from now, in colorado. it's not clear whether they're going to be allowed or plan to go into the apartment but they will come back here on scene. we will certainly be trying to talk to them. the reason with he don't know whether they will go in or not is because of how vexing, perplexing a situation this is.

but the building where james holmes lived that is still cordoned off and still roped off and people will not be allowed to go back in there. just a short while ago, the police department here in aurora, colorado, said all of the materials that needed to be removed, the explosive and dangerous materials inside the apartment of the 24-year-old james holmes have, indeed, been removed so the heavy presence with the bomb technicians and those people have left the scene. what was described inside that apartment is extremely eerie. the police officer saying what holmes left behind in his apartment was a sophisticated trap design to seriously injure, if not kill someone, and they are not happy about it either. >> make no mistake, okay? this apartment was designed, i say based on everything i've seen, to kill whoever entered it, okay? and who was most likely to enter that location after he planned and executed this horrific crime? it was going to be a police officer. make no mistake about it what was going on there. if you think we are angry, we sure as hell are angry. >> reporter: don, i ta

his contact with james holmes was weird and even bizarre. let's get to drew griffin who joins us now in denver on the phone. what are you learning? >> interesting thing. james holmes replied online on june 25th to join a private gun range out in colorado about a half hour drive from where he was living. and the owner there called back and got a message on james holmes' message machine that he described as very weird almost as if the person leaving the message was drunk, just weird and bizarre, a deep gutteral forced voice on the message machine. he said to his staff this guy doesn't get anywhere near our range until i meet him personally. he told one of our producers he didn't know if this guy was an idiot or what was happening. it was only after the killing that his staff and remembered the name that this guy had applied online and found out this is indeed the guy who applied online to join our gun range and had this very, very odd message machine at his home. it is bits and pieces but we now know that james holmes was at least trying or attempting to get to a gun range to practice

they definitely feel like the most troubling aspects and the most troubling devices they found in james holmes' apartment have been diffused and they want to remove those devices and take them to secure locations so if there need to be other det nations and taken apart and dismantled they can do that in more secure environments instead of this apartment. now what happens is the collection of evidence. authorities here want to go through his belongings and his computers and that sort of thing trying to find any kind of evidence that would help him explain how he prepared and what led to this massacre in aurora, colorado, so all of that work continues. we're seeing the local firefighters that were here starting to clean up the hoses that were brought in as a precaution, but all of the investigators and bomb technicians are still here. they say there still is several more hours of work to do inside that apartment and the material that they want to get out. they also want to begin assessing just exactly what james holmes put in there. they weren't exactly sure what kind of materials he had been us

today. 24-year-old james holmes is facing formal charges connected with the shooting spree that left 12 people dead. ed lawrence now has the latest from centennial, colorado. >> reporter: james holmes is being officially charged with murder be 12 people and injuring 58 others in a shooting rampage during a midnight showing of the new batman movie. during his first court appearance july 23rd, holmes remained silent. some people in the courtroom described him as dazed. legal analysts say holmes's lawyers are likely planning on an insanity defense. >> this is going a case where the focus will be on his mental state during this process in terms of when he is competent to even go through this process now. >> reporter: lawyers are also arguing over a defense motion to find out who leaked information about a packet holmes allegedly sent to a psychiatrist in the university of colorado denver. prosecutors said reports were inaccurate. the defense wants anything holmes sent to his doctor to be blocked from evidence. eleven survivors remain in the hospital, four in critical condition. edward lawre
